Dear EarthTalk: If you have an electric or plug-in hybrid car, you’re paying for electricity rather than gasoline all or most of the time. How does that cost compare to a gas-powered car’s cost-per-mile? And since the electricity may be generated from some other polluting source, does it really work out to be better for the environment? Toyota Motor has announced plans to develop a new small hybrid vehicle based on its Yaris, in the face of escalating competition from Honda with its new low-cost Insight hybrid. Toyota could also price its new 2010 Prius closer to the Insight, in a bid to undercut the latters price advantage.
