David Hermance, a senior executive at Toyota Motor who oversaw the company’s successful hybrid vehicle program, was killed Saturday when a small aircraft he was piloting crashed into the Pacific Ocean near San Pedro, California. He was 59.

He was an engineering wizard for Toyota with an environmentalist’s heart, an executive who championed hybrid petrol-electric cars years before global warming entered the popular conversation.
David Hermance, 59, of Huntington Beach, who died on Saturday when his experimental plane crashed into the ocean south-west of Los Angeles, was remembered fondly for his efforts to advance the kind of technology that could one day reduce America’s reliance on fossil fuels and ease pollution caused by the nation’s love affair with petrol guzzlers.
“He was the American father of the Prius,” said Bill Reinert, his longtime colleague.

Many folks assume that the young, well educated and affluent are the ones willing to pay a premium for a hybrid car. Autobytel, an automotive Web site, assumed just that and conducted a poll among consumers to prove it.
Yet only 16 percent of hybrid owners live on the West Coast versus 21 percent in the Midwest and 31 percent in the Northeast.
So Left Coasters fuss loud and long about clean air, yet East Coasters and Midwesterners put their money on the counter.

Toyota Motor Corp plans to commercialize a diesel hybrid subcompact car as early as 2010 in cooperation with its ally Isuzu Motors Ltd, which is strong in diesel engine technologies, informed sources said Saturday.

Imagine plugging your car into an electrical outlet in your garage and only having to fill your gas tank once a month. Pete Nortman, president and CEO of Monrovia-based EnergyCS, wants to make this a reality.
His company is developing a method to convert a hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, into a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which in the testing phase can get 100 miles per gallon.

China’s Chery to display first home-grown hybrid car at Auto China 2006

Chery Automobile Co Ltd said it will exhibit its hybrid car model A5ISG, the first of its kind to be developed by a Chinese auto maker, at the Auto China 2006 show in Beijing next week.
The company said that the hybrid model, which can switch between an electric motor and a gas or diesel engine, can be put into mass production.

Workers at the General Motors Fairfax assembly plant will start making a new Saturn hybrid car next year.
KMBC’s Jere Gish reported that the car is important to the future of both GM and the Fairfax plant.
The company highlighted its hybrid Saturn VUE on Thursday.
